Check the Status of an Estate Agent or Agency
First some quick background: All Estate Agents and Agencies must be registered with the Department of Human Settlements in terms of the Estate Agency Affairs Act 112 of 1976. It is unlawful for a person or company to conduct the business of an Estate Agent or Agency without being registered with the Estate Agency Affairs Board (the body set up to regulate the industry) or without being in possession of a valid Fidelity Fund Certificate that must be renewed annually. To check the registration status of an Agent or Agency you can go to the EAAB’s website at www.eaab.org.za (Figure 1)
Look for the “Find an Agent” or “Find an Agency” search boxes on the right hand side of the screen and enter the person or business’s name. Results are displayed on screen (Figure 2). Clicking the “Full Detail” link next to each result will bring up a window containing further information such as address and contact details (Figure 3).
To check the validity of an Agent’s/Agency’s Fidelity Fund Certificate you will need to call the EAAB directly. Make a note of the reference number displayed on screen when you view the Full Detail (Figure 3) as this may be requested. The telephone number to call is 087 285 3222.
